16 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE AUGUST 6, 1993

Reviewed by Joseph Morris Independent videographer and lesbian Ellen Spiro has put together a humorous, fascinating look at gay culture throughout the southern United States which airs on WNEO Channel 45/49 in Akron and Youngstown, at 8 pm Monday, August 9.
Called Greetings From Out Here, the hour-long documentary was shot on Hi-8 video as Spiro spent several months touring the country. It started out as an attempt to get closer to her southern roots but quickly became a search for gay America not readily visible, but hidden in the back roads and quiet towns. These are, according to the photographer and director, the brave people who don't flee to gay ghettos but stay at home to "be who they are, where they are.”
Spiro is a seasoned photographer with other award-winning credits including DiAna's Hair Ego, (In)visible Women, Party Safe, and The Gaymes. And she's not camera shy in this video diary: there are frequent portraits of herself and Sam the dog, along with witty observations. Some of the visual interludes are the grand dames of rural Americana: towns with sexually suggestive names, kitschy motels and restaurants, homes held together with hubcaps, the ubiq-
uitously styled postcard that says "Greetings from (place name)." Television byway biographer Charles Kuralt has been on these roads. But I'm not so sure he's interviewed these people.
The tour takes a crisscross path that manages to stop at some key events including the Texas Gay Rodeo in Dallas, the gay Krewe parading its decadence in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, the Short Mountain (Tennessee) Radical Faerie Gathering on May Day, and the lesbian Rhythm Fest in rural Georgia. In between, the adventure is peppered with visits to various lesbian and gay luminaries and eccentrics, including Isis, who lives in a broken-down bus in the Arkansas woods, and traveling Monk magazine publisher Michael Lane. We also meet several automobile mechanics who delight in fixing Spiro's traveling VW homovan.
Greetings From Out Here was shot in 1991-1992 with funding provided by the Independent Television Service (ITVS), channeling funds provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. ITVS's mandate is to increase the diversity of programming available to public television by supporting work that takes creative risks and addresses the needs of underserved audi-
